SELF AND SURFACE
19.5" x 25.5" Graphite pencil and white charcoal pencil on toned gray paper. 2024.
Self portrait of myself exploring the concept of “self” and how others may see me versus how I see myself. Many people may find me as quiet, thoughtful (deep in thought), and even as an artist. This version of myself is shown by a “smaller me” sitting quietly on a stool in the woods, concentrated on my sketching. In conjunction with how I see myself, I rendered a “larger me” watching smaller me. How larger me is reacting to and perceiving smaller me is indicative of how I see myself: as again, and even maybe more so to myself, thoughtful, contemplative, and also judgmental.
