LUMIS, LORD OF LIGHT
18" x 24" Printed ink, graphite pencil, and white charcoal pencil on toned-gray paper. 2024.
Inspired from a character my dad created. Lumis is wizard-god who has divinely inspired control over the lands such that he can move and manipulate the land around him. He is also a Lord of Light, so while he has control over lands, he also is a being of light, gaining his power from God (the ultimate source of power). I chose to represent this by placing a halo of moons (the moon reflects the light of a greater source) over his hooded head. I also gave Lumis a staff with a crescent moon below a shinning sun. Experimented with utilizing the screen-printing process along with drawing.
As my dad described to me: “In the beginning, God said, ‘Let there be light . . .’ this was the beginning of creation. Lumis cannot create out of nothing as God can, ‘ex nihilo,’ but he can rearrange and transform the landscape as he sees fit and as a means of exercising mastery and control over the realm he occupies. To bring evil to an end and establish cities of glory. In this way, he can literally uplift and move sites/lands around a realm and so position himself and his warriors to best exact rule and dominion over the realm for the betterment of his subjects. He is not wicked, but neither do you want him as your enemy lest you want a mountain dropped on your head. Lumis, best as an ally, in the service of the God of Creation.”
